Bebo, D&D, Social Wars & More

Sorry if we’ve been a bit quiet recently; to say that we’ve all been as busy as a Web 1.0 giant scurrying round looking for social networks to snap up, would be putting it mildly.

So yes, AOL bought Bebo. It took a lot of people by suprise, but TechCrunch mentioned it as a possibility last month. There’s plenty of comment out on the web about this, so we’ll just say that we think it could be the best thing AOL have done in years, and that we hope it goes better than their biggest web 1.0 acquisition.

Almost as momentous, but probably not as well noted, Gary Gygax, one of the creators of Dungeons & Dragons, passed away. The Guardian pointed to this rather wonderful obituary in the New York Times which argued that we all live in Gary’s world now that the geeks have inherited the earth. The obituary was illustrated with this fantastic flow-chart which now adorns my desktop.

Also via The Guardian, comes this frankly alarming illustration of something the creator calls The Social Graph Wars.

Hmmm; Google as The Empire & Facebook as The Rebel Alliance? I think that the New York Times might be onto something. And can I say how childishly happy it makes me that there is a Star Wars wiki called Wookiepedia for me to link to? OK, we’ll carry on then..

This week also saw the annual SXSW Festival; last year’s festival proved to be a tipping point for Twitter, the micro-blogging platform. Despite having signed up last year, I’d never really given it a go and so, better late than never, decided to dive in. Jane at SEOmoz did something similar and explained why.

Unfortunately it seems that I’m too late as this year’s Twitter was FriendFeed. Frankly, I only have so much time in the day, so this one may have to wait till next year (assuming that it’s still around then).

Finally, we have to mention how proud we are to have been part of WCRS’ campaign for Transport For London. If you haven’t seen it already, why not head over to Do The Test, and keep your eyes open. Or just have a look at it here.

Traffic to the site has been way beyond our most optimistic expectations, and we even got to #1 on reddit (although I forgot to screen-grab this momentous occasion - anyone who did manage to capture it, please let me know). We’ve even had our first tribute, with which we’ll leave you & wish you a very good weekend.

The flow chart is fantastic! It amuses me a lot that LOLcats is at the end of its road and IT department is a never-ending loop.
