BBC, ITV & C4 Launch VOD Service: Is Joost Worried Yet?

A very quick post as TechCrunch UK has some great background, but essentially the BBC, ITV & Channel 4 have announced plans to launch a joint on-demand web TV service. As with all these things it has a stupid code name (Kangaroo apparently, possibly influenced by the marsupial nature of Google’s Platypus project), but I’d suggest that it should really be called Joost RIP.

I know that the guys behind Joost are very switched on (no pun intended) and are convinced that they have a great product, but following Bebo’s OpenMedia announcement earlier this month, I can’t help but feel that Kangaroo could well prove to be a fatal blow. When sites that people know, trust & instinctively visit offer these services, why would most people go anywhere else?

yeah if I was them I’d be worried,

What they have is purely a distrubution platform so they need to be aggregrating the best content or doing something else truely innovative ala lastfm
