Google Revenue, Hatebook & The UK's Love Of Viagra

It’s been an interesting week and so we’ve got a lot to cover; we’ll try to pull out some of the most interesting stories & developments in the world of digital over the last 7 days.

Google announced another massive hike in profits & revenues, with increases of 46% & 57% respectively. With the UK making up 16% of total revenues, or $661 million (approx. £323 million), I feel that this puts them on course to coming very close to beating ITV’s revenues by the end of 2007 (as I suggested would be the case back in August).

Some other interesting data out of Google this week was the release of a table showing which countries are most likely to search for some popular terms. The phrases where the UK leads the world are:

  • Hangover
  • Botox
  • Viagra
  • David Beckham
  • Kate Moss

I’m sure that a professional anthropologist could have a field day working out what it means that we spend most of our time searching for cures for too much booze, aging, problems in the bedroom & information on attractive celebrities, but I’m not even going to try!

Apparently imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, in which case Facebook must be feeling positively embarrassed this week. First came Hatebook, which allows people to let out their inner misanthrope; instead of adding friends, you list those you hate. And then, via Chungaiz, I found Crackbook, which is essentially a spoof of the all-conquering social network, mocking the spread of annoying apps and friend requests from people you can barely remember from school. It’s also a nice piece of viral marketing for a new book.

Diesel are looking to get a bit of viral video action, in the style of Cadbury’s Gorilla or our own Effortless Brylcreem ad. They’ve got a guy claiming to be one of Finland’s top disco dancers.. or something. EIther way it’s really quite lovely, and could be filling up your in-box very soon.

Finally, we were very happy to find out that we work in truly exalted circles. The Sartorialist is an exclusive blog aimed at promoting those the author feels are truly well-dressed individuals. And featuring on the site recently was Robin Wight, founder of our sister agency WCRS and one of the creators of Engine Group. We think Robin looks fabulous, as do most of those leaving comments on the site.

Have a great weekend.

On the other hand, style never goes out of fashion.

Sire, I salute you. A man who can confidently wear pink can conquer the world!
