Pet Shop Boys Use QR Codes

Pet Shop Boys integrate QR technology into their new video “Integral” to amplify the message of the song. Integral indeed. Nice.

Great to see QR codes reaching out into new audiences, but it is also a missed opportunity - whilst it raises the exposure of these codes, anyone who tries to scan one in will probably be disappointed due to the degradation the video goes through in the compression process to create mpeg or flash videos. Even the hi-res version on their website is impossible to scan, even if you can hit the pause at the relevant frame. Whilst QR codes are resilient to degradation, there are limits and these appear to have been exceeded here.

For those depaarate to try the scan, you can download key frames of the animation displayed in the central panel as a 2400 page PDF document. I had no problem scanning these from my laptop screen. You can get this from http://www.petshopboys.co.uk/downloads/integral.pdf - it is 50Mb though
