Google After Shave, The Search Engine Challenge & More Sony Bunnies

Well, it’s that day of the week again. Yes, it’s Friday, and so we thought that we would share with you some of the things that have made us smile, frown or just shake our heads at this week.

First up we have news of an exciting new product from Google: after shave! Yes, as if the (allegedly) imminent release of Google Phone, we’ve found photos of the new eau-de-toillette from the search giant. Except that it’s not of course; it’s one of the worst bits of fake branding we’ve ever seen. As is the Google MP3 player. In the past Google has been involved in disputes regarding copyrights - we wonder if they’ll be getting the lawyers in for this one?

Next up is a, potentially, depressing tale. We’ve already explained how much, & why, we love the new Sony Bravia bunnies ad, but we’ve recently discovered a rather nasty suggestion that the ad is not quite as original as it at first seems. Gizmodo is reporting that the ad is actually rather too similar to the work of kozyndan, an LA based art collective. Whilst there were similar suggestions over the recent Cadbury’s gorilla ad, the link was rather shaky; in this case the evidence appears to be more damning. We really hope that it’s not true - if any of the parties involved would like to give us a shout with details of what actually went on, we’d love to hear.

On to something more lighthearted, and perfect for those with the Friday afternoon blues: we’ve designed a new game for the Brylcreem site we built. It’s an adaption of the classic Pong game and is as addictive as it is simple. Give it a go, just don’t blame us if you’re still on it at 8 pm tonight.

Finally, following the changes to the Yahoo! search results and reports that Yahoo! provides better click through rates than Google, someone has developed an equivalent of the Pepsi challenge involving the big 3 search engines. If you go to the Google Operating System blog you can enter a search term & you will then be presented with the top result from Google, Yahoo! & MSN, except that you won’t be told which came from which. The blog is asking people to vote on which result they feel is best & will, we assume, release the results at some point in the future.

I was always able to tell Pepsi from Coke (Pepsi’s way sweeter) but couldn’t tell which was which here; let us know how you get on.

Have a great weekend!

Hat-tip to Hils for the Gizmodo story and the main image which is a crop of this one.
