Do You Digg Diggnation?
Diggnation is the video podcast (or vodcast if you must) produced by the founder of Digg.com Kevin Rose and his friend from the Tech TV days, Alex Albrecht. For those of you who don’t know Kevin and Alex basically hangout, drink beer and generally have a great time discussing some of the top stories on the social news website Digg.com and the next one is happening this Wednesday (October 3rd).
What does this mean to the average person on the street? Well nothing really but for millions of people every year all around the world it is a way of life!
Digg was launched way back in 2004 which in web 2.0 terms is a pretty long time. Almost very week since digg launched and they only had two stories to discuss, Kevin and Alex have recorded the Diggnation podcast; these days there are thousands of stories submitted every week.
But why do people care about stories they’ve already dugg? I suppose it’s for the same reasons people watch Match of the Day on a Saturday night even if they’ve already saved the match on Sky + ; it’s the pundit driven controversy people crave! When someone who has been there, done it and got a ridiculous number of quirky T-shirts people pay attention.
Diggnation isn’t about the stories, it isn’t about Kevin and Alex or all the characters in their bubble; it’s about a community, it’s about belonging to a group that is free where people can express themselves all week via digg.com and then sit down and watch or listen to how they made a difference to the world.
Out of the 117 Diggnations so far there have been various live events; at MacWorld Expo (where Kevin’s favourite CEO, Steve Jobs, announced the launch of the iPhone - just to add to the bite in the diggnations, Alex loves Microsoft), next to the ski slopes at Lake Tahoe and the Beach Chalet in San Francisco (which I was lucky enough to attend). The recipe for a Live Diggnation is beer, Kevin, Alex, a camera crew and the sort of die hard fans you could only find in America (mainly Californian).
This time it’s different in one way at least; Diggnation is coming to London baby. Yes, you read that right; for the first time in its history, a live diggnation will be coming from outside the US and man are the guys excited.
The reason for the trip across the pond is that Kevin Rose is talking at the Future of Web Apps Expo in London (3-5 October, 2007). He has a pretty impressive CV to be talking about at such events seeing as he has founded three companies (digg.com, revison3 and Pownce) all of which are going strong.
The London diggnation starts at 7:30 pm in the ExCel Centre and is free to access after 6:30pm. I look forward to seeing everyone there for a beer and a laugh.

Didn’t they do a Diggnation from Japan once? Maybe not in front of an audience, but it was still from overseas…
Just askin’!
Yes you’re right they did one in Tokyo. It was kind of live but none of the people around them had a clue what was going on it wasn’t a “live” event per say. Good comment though
They also did a Diggnation from Canada.
Hey Phillip thanks for the comment and yes you are right about diggnation in Canada (episode #7) although that wasn’t a live diggnation.
Thanks for the feedback guys; I’ve edited the post now so that it’s more clear that this was the first event with an audience, from outside the US.
