Bebo Is More Popular Than Google In The UK
Wow. This is a bit like spraying “Clapton is God” on the walls of the loo in the Marquee one night, and then going to hear Jimi Hendrix play and having your whole outlook on life turned around the next day…
I read today in NMA that Bebo is the most viewed site, ahead of Google in the UK according to a new report from comScore; admittedly I’m a bit exciteable today, I’ll warn you, but that to me says two things which are significant:
1. Socialising is more popular than searching
2. People are finally getting back into the habit of getting to a website by typing in or bookmarking the page directly rather than putting in “Bebo” into a Google search.
I was amazed when CiarĂ¡n told me that people would write “Google” into Yahoo! (or MSN) search in order to access their preferred search engine, that they thought that search engines are the internet. It seems that maybe the tide is finally turning: the ComScore report found that social network site Bebo attracted 8.6bn page impressions during August, ahead of Google and associated sites with 8.4bn.
I guess that school was out for summer, so the kids merely upped their usage over the school holidays! Since the weather was so crap, I don’t really blame them.

An interesting post, but the truth is that whilst Bebo is more popular than Google it still gets a lot of its traffic from the search giant.
This report from Hitwise shows that bebo is one of the top search terms in the UK, whilst searches for YouTube have replaced searches for ‘funny videos’; it seems like Google is still acting as the UK’s internet address bar in that people use it even when they know exactly what site they want.
