More Women On The Web. And?
There’s already been a lot of coverage of the new research from Ofcom about the changing media usage of the UK population. The main findings were:
- The over 65s spend more time online than any other age group
- Time spent on the (home) phone, watching TV & listening to the radio are all down since 2002
- People now spend twice as much time online as they did
- And women in the 25-49 age-range spend more time online than men of the same age
This is being billed as a major shift and in some ways it is. But it’s one that we’ve been talking to clients about for quite a while. From our own experience of tracking internet usage on certain campaigns, we know that women of that age-group are now very internet savvy.
And, if I can resort to ridiculous generalisations, for anyone who has been watching the growth of social networks & social media, it should come as no surprise at all. For if in Web 1.0, content was king, but in the world of Web 2.0, conversation is king - content is just something to talk about, then why would anyone be shocked that more women are moving online? They tend to be much more social animals, and these stats just go to show that’s still the case.

“This is being billed a major shit and in some ways it is” - classic spelling error
Not surprised by these stats, especially the decrease in use of the phone and Women spending longer online than men, both of which I think are directly linked!!
With regards to Women using the net more than a man this has always been evident even before the Internet was as widespread as it is now, before the web it was the phone.
Women would spend hours gassing away to friends where as males tend to be short and to the point, saving long discussions/conversations until they are face to face - the internet is no different and with sites like facebook the ladies have the perfect platform to endlessly waste away hours peering into other people’s lives!
The technology may change but people’s habbits don’t.

p.s: You might want to add in an “f” into your “major shit” !!

Jason - yes, ahem, thanks for pointing that out. A Freudian slip perhaps, but now amended.
