Friday Round-Up: Facebook Apps, MySpace Sheep & Donkey Kong

It’s Friday, the sun is shining and all is well with the world. There have been so many interesting stories out there over the last few days, that we thought we’d share some of our favourites with you.

Carlsberg carried out what must be the first ever case of altruistic littering when they dropped £5,000 worth of £10 & £20 notes on the street of London. Each had a removable sticker with the strapline “Carlsberg don’t do litter. But if they did it would probably be the best litter in the world“. Why do I only ever see people dropping crisp packets?

The Facebook app came of age, with TechCrunch reporting that TripAdvisor had paid $3 million for the Where I’ve Been application. The app has been added to the profiles of 2.3 million users, so the purchase price values those users (and the data that the app gives access to) at $1.30 each. Exactly what TripAdvisor will do with Where I’ve Been remains to be seen, as does which app will be next. Rumours that the National Blood Service were planning a bid for the Vampire app could not be confirmed.

Starburst seeded an ad on to YouTube that ranks with some of the best black comedy we’ve seen in a while. It shows a man with a very strange Midas touch - everything he touches turns to Skittles, and has so far been viewed over 130,000 times, although we expect that to ramp up pretty quickly. The stand out line has to be “I met a man on the bus today. I shook his hand. He’ll never see his family again“. Dark!

The Arctic Monkeys may be known for finding fame via MySpace, but now it’s the turn of a different animal; a sheep. A hotel in Arizona noticed that lots of guests were taking photos of themselves with a model sheep that lived in the lobby, and placing them on their profiles on sites such as MySpace & Facebook. The hotel took the canny step of giving the sheep its own profile & now the Mondrian Sheep is going viral.

Finally, this story about a film chronicling two men’s attempts to win the Donkey Kong World Record re-ignited our love of the game (you may have noticed that we’re fans of retro arcade games). We’ve since found this version of the game, and expect office productivity to plummet accordingly.

Have a good weekend!

[…] Should Carlsberg get a Nobel prize for innovative marketing? Carlsberg seem to be specializing in alternative marketing. Last August, they littered the streets of London with £5,000 worth of £10 and £20 banknotes with a sticker on them saying “Carlsberg don’t do litter. But if they did it would probably be the best litter in the world“. Click here to check it out! […]
