When Celebrity Blogging Goes Wrong: The Rosespace Affair
Roseanne Barr, the comedian most famous for the hit show Roseanne, has hit the headlines for the first time in years over what we’re calling The Rosespace affair.
Over the weekend a number of posts appeared on her MySpace page with messages such as “I need to stop drinking, but I do not wish to … I am in Hawaii on the beach drunk,” and “when you are old, you pee your pants more it seems,” as well as talking about the values of spam and cursing George Bush.
Initially it seemed that Roseanne had been blogging under the influence of alcohol (something many bloggers have done and often regretted the next morning) but the saga didn’t end there.
A post was then made the next day on Roseanne World, her official site, with the following message:
One of the interns who was administering my MySpace page (NOT Joey) has been fired. I apologize for the offensive blogging that went on there last night. I write only at RoseanneWorld.com I apologize to all on MySpace who received the offensive bulletins.
Case closed? Not yet – another message popped up on her site 3 hours later saying that the intern had also stolen a sex tape and offering a $25,000 reward for its return. It was alleged that Perez Hilton (the celebrity blogging king) knows who took it, something he has since denied.
It’s going to be interesting to see how this story progresses (has her site been hacked, is there really a sex tape or is it all a big publicity stunt?) and it’s not the first time that celebrities have claimed to have their MySpace pages hacked. Lily Allen (who is well known for her outbursts against other celebrities) had a messaged posted on her MySpace last month saying that after a night out with Courtney Love she could understand why Kurt (Cobain) killed himself. She lated claimed the blog had been hacked and Courtney forgave her (via a post on her own MySpace blog).
All this raises a few key points that all bloggers and wannabe bloggers should follow:
- When something goes online, it’s hard to take off again
- Make sure you use secure passwords and don’t give them out to anyone you can’t trust 100%
- Try not to blog whilst drunk but if the temptation is too hard then make sure you save your posts as a draft and publish in the morning (Post whilst drunk, edit whilst sober!)
We’d love to hear from readers on any other mishaps they may have seen (or done) on the blogsphere and the outcomes.
