Mobile Search Is Here & Yahoo! Are Ready To Go
Here at eyefall we can’t get enough of mobile search. Whilst every week brings a new pronouncement from somewhere on the web as to what the next ‘big thing’ will be, we’re convinced that it’s mobile search.
As phone screens get bigger, networks get stronger, and the technology keeps improving, we just can’t see how it can fail. Companies such as 3 and Nokia are making selling points of their phones’ capacity to handle mobile search. And now Yahoo! is rolling out something it’s calling oneSearch to Europe.
There’s a great overview of the service over at Search Engine Land, but essentially the idea is to provide search results that are aimed at mobile users. In other words, results that are localised and informational, aimed at users on the go, rather than desk-bound internet surfers.
Yahoo!’s press release puts it like this:
Yahoo! oneSearch is designed to make searching for and finding information as quick as possible for consumers… For example, if a consumer wants to go to a movie this weekend, they just need to type the name of the movie into the search box. The search results would first list the movie, including a user rating, local theaters the movie is playing at, news headlines related to the movie and more.
How would we put it? Make sure that you’re content is set up to be mobile friendly, tagged against your location, and designed to encourage user interaction in the form of ratings, recommendations, etc..
As always, if you’d like any advice on mobile search or the opportunities & challenges it offers, just give us a call.
