Online voting gone wrong

The NHL’s voting for this year’s All-Star game, which was played last weekend, was carried out via unlimited online balloting. Anyone could vote for any player as many times as they wanted, as long as they filled out the entire ballot.

A campaign to ‘Vote for Rory’, a not very spectacular player who normally wouldn’t be considered for this, was started that the media latched onto. To try and get Rory into the All-Star game, some fans used vote bots to bypass the poorly implemented NHL Captcha system and register a load of votes.

Unfortunately, he didn’t make it as it seems a bunch of his votes were discounted from the system by the NHL. But it shows how online voting could be manipulated…
